The Catalan resort of Boí Taüll will become the official venue for two of the ISMF World Cup Skimo 2024 events on 27 and 28 January, after having hosted the World Ski Mountaineering Championships in February and March 2023 with great international success, organised, approved and supported by the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF).

The format of this World Cup, unlike the World Cups, is based on the two disciplines that will be present at the Olympic Games in Milano Cortina 2026: Sprint y Mixed Relays. The sprint will be almost unchanged from the current format. In keeping with the format of last year's World Championships, the two-competitor relays will be mixed.

In addition, more than 80 people are expected to be involved in the organisation, and more than 50 technicians from the national teams are expected to gather in the Vall de Boí. In total, this privileged territory located in the middle of the Pyrenees will be for a week the sporting refuge of some 350 accredited people involved in this competition.

As for participating athletes, Oriol Cardona (Banyoles) has been proclaimed winner in the first round of the World Cup and has recently been proclaimed European champion in the Sprint speciality, as he did two years ago in Boí Taüll. In last year's World Championships he won the gold medal in the Sprint event and fifth place in the Mixed Relay; this year he is once again one of the clear candidates to win the medal in the Sprint and Mixed Relay events. For her part, Marta Garcia (Calldetenes) after a fourth position in the Relay last year and a top 10 in the Sprint, will demonstrate her possibilities and will try to take the lead in the Sprint and Mixed Relay events.

In the U23 category, it is worth highlighting Ot Ferrer (Berga), who came first in the 2020 Youth Olympic Games and 6th in the last European Championships of the modality, with many options to make podium in the Sprint race and Maria Costa, winner of a gold medal in the Sprint modality in the 2020 Youth Olympic Games and a silver in the U23 category in the European Championships held in Flaine-Chamonix this past week, in addition to being in the top 10 of the absolute race.

The role of Ana Alonso from Granada, who managed to qualify as European runner-up in this discipline on Wednesday 10 January in Flaine-Chamonix (France), should also be taken into account.

The Vall de Boí is located in a privileged setting in the middle of Alta Ribagorça and has become a world-renowned example of synergy between sport and culture. In fact, it not only enjoys the prominence of the Aigüestortes National Park and the Estany de Sant Maurici, but also boasts an enviable setting that stands out for its valleys and mountains, not forgetting the Boí Tablón ski resort.

The resort has all the necessary services to host an event such as the ISMF World Cup Skimo 2024. Its location, altitude and orientation guarantee ideal snow conditions. In addition, the morphology of its ski area makes it the perfect venue for hosting major sporting events, also taking into account the services, accommodation and operational centres that facilitate the organisational dynamics of a competition of these characteristics.

The international route of Boí Taüll

In February 2022 the resort became the official venue for the European Championships Skimo Boí Taüll, the European ski mountaineering championships organised by the ISMF. This is a large-format competition in which athletes from 19 countries took part and was undoubtedly the precedent that made Boí Taüll a ski resort fully prepared to host international competitions.

The proof of this was last 2023 when the resort hosted the ISMF World Championship Skimo. An event that brought together more than 650 people linked to the competition in the Valley, with the participation of 298 athletes from 27 countries, accompanied by their coaches and trainers. At Catalan level it culminated with the title of world champion Oriol Cardona.
