Every sport has its accessories, and mountain biking is no different. But many of these accessories are designed to save, not lives, but unnecessary pain.

The mountain bike or mtb is much more than just having a great bike. Mountain biking can be a dangerous sport, like any sport where you're riding at full speed and on terrain you may not be able to control.

The younger generation has a tendency to think they are invincible, so they will not bother with common sense safety equipment that could save them from unnecessary bumps, bruises, cuts or breaks. Of course, even with all the safety equipment we will not avoid the possibility of an accident but at least the mishaps are likely to be less severe.

Bicycle helmet

The helmet is not really an "accessory", it is an essential part of the mountain biker's equipment. Every mountain biker is going to fall off their bike at one time or another, and it is very likely that the helmet is going to get knocked off, much better than the rider's head. Helmets these days are comfortable and come in a variety of styles. Make sure you buy one that fits properly.

Eye protection

Secondly, eye protection with proper goggles is essential. When descending at high speed, it is easy for your tyres to kick up stones or dirt which, if they get into your eyes, will blind you and cause you to run off the road or hit a tree. There is always the possibility of mosquitoes or insects getting into your eyes, not to mention any branch of a bush at the foot of the trail.

Once we have discussed helmets and eye protection, everything else can be classified as "accessories", necessary but not compulsory.

Repair kit

Of these types of accessories, perhaps the most important is the repair kit. You might be able to ride your whole life on city streets without getting a flat tyre, but when you're riding in the mountains, the chance of a flat tyre rises exponentially. You don't want to get stuck on the road, so make sure you have a repair kit under the seat of your bike. And just as important, practice with that repair kit so you know how to use the tools.

Gloves

It's more comfortable to ride a bike with gloves on than without. Mountain bike gloves are specially designed to withstand the harsh conditions in which they are used, and will not only make your grip on the handlebar sleeves more comfortable, but will also prevent nasty scrapes if you fall off your bike.

Hydration system

Nothing ruins the trip more than feeling hungry or thirsty while you're cycling... but thirst is probably more annoying than hunger. Carry at least one bottle of water. A hydration backpack is very useful: a specially equipped backpack with liquid of your choice in a plastic bag, snug and stable so you won't feel it.

Footwear

MTB shoes are specially designed for this sport. Look for shoes that are comfortable, durable and suitable for mtb riding. They come with stiff soles for better pedalling efficiency, and are fitted with clipless pedal bindings.

Shorts

Padded shorts are a must for any type of cycling! They increase comfort and won't hurt your bum!
