Los Roques Archipelago
Los Roques is a National Park in Venezuela, home to one of the largest marine reserves in the Caribbean. It is a highly valued tourist destination in Venezuela, a place from which all visitors return amazed by its beauty and paradisiacal aspect. On their return they all agree that they feel as if they have returned from paradise.
It is an archipelago of islands and cays, many of which are submerged in the sea and emerge at low tide. The archipelago still looks very much like a quiet fishing area, as access to the Los Roques archipelago is by boat or light aircraft, and some of the cays and islets are quite large. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean.
It is a surprising landscape, the keys are very low and the white paradisiacal beaches are almost at the same level as the waters of the Caribbean Sea, little vegetation splashes the white sands and it is common to see iguanas and turtles in the area, the latter crawl along the beaches in search of a place to lay their eggs. During the day the sun warms these white beaches, and thanks to the islands' exposure to the sea at night there is a very pleasant breeze that chases away mosquitoes at night, a very important aspect to take into account in a tropical area.Los Roques ArchipelagoIn Selesquí, one of the islands of the archipelago of Los Roques, we can find one of the largest reserves of marine birds, where it is common to find pelicans among other no less striking species. And very close by on the French Francisquí Key we find a considerable concentration of seagulls, it is a beautiful place for bird lovers where they can see some of the most beautiful seabirds of the Caribbean flying.
As may be obvious and it is... this is a great place to dive, diving in a marine reserve like Los Roques guarantees an incredible experience for both novices and experienced divers, whether scuba diving or snorkelling, diving in the archipelago of Los Roques is one of the main tourist activities in the area. Among the colourful fish that we usually see in the Caribbean it is equally easy to come across a barracuda or moray eel.
Thanks to the lack of fresh water, the islands have remained almost untouched and it is very gratifying to find one of the few places on earth where nature is at its best. The only place where people live is on Gran Roque islet in the north of the archipelago, the rest of the islands are very small. There is a small airport on Gran Roque.
