The last ascent

He was about to make his last ascent.

Memories of light, green meadows and infinite horizons of his early days came to his mind. Mulhacén and Veleta, with his brother, Alcazaba and Almanzor, with good friends, Monteperdido and Aneto, with unforgettable companions, Toubkal, Montblanc, Elbrus, with a dear relative...

On this occasion, he felt strong and confident. Sure that he had prepared thoroughly and happy to be able to finish it with his dearest person, his daughter. He remained strongly attached to her hand, feeling her warmth and security.

Suddenly, a shrill, continuous "beeping" sound flooded the hospital room. She squeezed her father's hand tightly as tears slid down her cheeks. The doctor had given her no hope for an early outcome.

When she looked up at him, she saw his clean, calm and satisfied gaze, as when he returned from those long mountain trips.
