The Anayet lakes are a magical place. Just think what the wall in front of you looks like: the Pico del Anayet. The Peak of Anayet is one of the classics of the Pyrenees. Like its neighbour Midi D'Ossau owe their origin to volcanic phenomena that occurred after the Hercynian orogeny and prior to the Alpine orogeny that gave rise to the current Pyrenean mountain range.

All this led in 2007 to the declaration of this area Site of Geological Interest. At the foot of the Ibones d'Anayet, we will have a beautiful view of these two giants, the Anayet and its neighbour, the imposing Midi D'Ossau, on the other side of the French border. This photograph is a must in any good Pyreneanist's album. It is a nice walk to get to these Ibones, either from the Ski resort of Formigal or from the Aragon Valley, following the Rust Channel (which makes good mention of his name).

Where can we find the Ibones de Anayet?

The beautiful Ibones de Anayet are located on the municipal border of Sallent de Gállego, in the province of Huesca, at an altitude of 2,233 metres and at the foot of the Anayet peak, which reaches around 2,545 metres.

The water of the ibones is pure, transparent, crystalline and comes from the precipitations that come from the summer and melted snow or winter, both from the thaw and the nivology of the place, all the water from the Ibones of Anayet, falls from a place known as La Rinconada, which has become another obligatory stop if you are visiting the park of the Pyrenees, here it gives rise to the river of the Canal Roya, giving rise to the river of the Canal Roya, a tributary of the Aragon.

How to get to the Ibones de Anayet?

If you are visiting these beautiful trails, we recommend that you bring water and a good coat in your luggage, because to get to the wonderful Ibones de Anayet you have to go on foot, to take the route you have to get to a place called the corral de las mulas, approximately 3 kilometres from the village of Formigal, in Huesca, which is a road belonging to France. So get ready, because the route is long, but every step taken will be worth it.

Another way to get to the Ibones de Anayet is from Candanchú, climbing the Canal Roya, this route is more suitable for adventurous visitors who love adrenaline, as it is a more complex route.

Walking along these marvellous trails will connect you with the fullness and perfection of nature, but be careful in the waters of Ibones de Anayet. It is best not to take a dip in these waters, as they are full of leeches.

A simple route

In order to get to this charming place without any problems, here we will show you a route that will take you to and from the Ibones de Anayet: At the beginning you must start from a tarmac track that you will find in front of the corral de las mulas on a road on the border that leads to the border of Portalet and Formigal, approximately 3km from there.

After the first 3 kilometres, it starts a slight ascent parallel to the Barranco de Culivillas ravine and reaches one of the ski lifts of the Formigal Winter Resort.

Then you will come across the first part of the path, here the ascent is a little steeper. The path continues parallel to the ravine and crosses it several times.

After a considerable climb, you will reach a valley, from where you will start to see the first lakes, and from there you should continue walking until you reach your destination to enjoy the beautiful scenery. To return to Corral de las Mulas you must follow the same route as the ascent, you will arrive tired, but happy.
