    The Slovene Mountain Trail or Transverzala, 550 km through Slovenia. Starting in Maribor, near the Austrian border, to Ankaran, on the Adriatic coast, through the Pohorje region and the limestone mountains of the Karavanke and Kamnik-Savinja and Julian Alps.

    From Maribor near the Austrian border in the northeast to Ankaran on the Adriatic coast in the southwest, the route covers the vast forested plateau of Pohorje, the rugged limestone peaks of the Julian Alps and Kamnik-Savinja, with its protected via ferrata routes, the traditional alpine pastures and flowery ridges of the Karavanke, and the hills and wooded olive groves of the limestone Karavanqueado region stretching towards the coast.


    Practical guide


    When to go?

    June-September; some of the easiest walks can be done in May and October, but note that the huts will be closed.

    Difficulty

    The more difficult sections require mountaineering experience as they are strenuous, often very exposed, and will have fixed protection sections; here the use of helmets and climbing gear is recommended. auto-belaying (ferrata).

    • The Julian Alps, including Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain, the Triglav Lakes Valley, and the Vršič Pass.

    The 550 km route is presented in 12 sections of 3 to 6 days, all with starting and finishing points accessible by public transport.
