Here we propose a perfect 5-day route to fully enjoy the summer in a camper van:

Day 1: Departure from Barcelona to Sitges

After picking up the van, the first stop can be Sitges, just 40 minutes away on the C-32. This picturesque seaside town is the perfect place to start your trip with a swim at Sant Sebastià beach and dinner by the sea. There are nearby overnight stays with views of the Mediterranean.

Day 2: From Sitges to Tarragona

Following the coastline, Tarragona is a destination that combines Roman history with long, uncrowded beaches. You can visit the Roman amphitheatre or relax at Platja Llarga. Sleeping in motorhome areas near the city is easy, with good services.

    Day 3: Ebro Delta

About 2 hours from Tarragona, the Ebro Delta is one of the most unique natural parks in Catalonia. Perfect for those who love wildlife, photography and kayaking. Here you can taste rice dishes with fresh fish and sleep in natural spaces, always respecting the rules of parking and conservation.

Day 4: Back inland - Montserrat

From the coast, the change of scenery towards the Montserrat massif is spectacular. This sacred mountain is perfect for a walk at dawn or for those looking for a cooler night in the middle of nature. There are areas where you can park your camper van near the monastery or in rural areas.

Day 5: Return to Barcelona with a stop in Cardona

Before closing the circle, a stop in Cardona and its medieval castle is a lesser-known gem. You can visit it and tour its salt mines before returning to Barcelona.

What to do in Barcelona before returning the camper?

If you still have time left, what to do in Barcelona is not a difficult question. Walk around the Born district, have an ice cream in Barceloneta, enjoy a flamenco show or simply get lost in the bunkers of Carmel for a last panoramic view of the city. The advantage of having a campervan is that you can even go to the northern beaches like Ocata or Montgat before returning the van.

Basic tips and advice for first-timers

If this is the first time you are going to live such an experience, there are several important aspects to take into account in order to make your campervan adventure comfortable and legal.

    - Overnight and camping regulations: In Spain you are allowed to spend the night in a camper van anywhere you are allowed to park (like a car), as long as you do not "unfold" the vehicle (i.e. do not open awnings, do not take out chairs or tables, etc.). This is considered "camping", and is only allowed in designated areas. In the province of Barcelona there are many areas specifically for campers, as well as campsites that accept this type of vehicle.
    - Cooking outdoors: Many camper models include indoor and portable kitchens. In summer, cooking outdoors is tempting, but it is not always allowed, especially in areas at risk of forest fires. If you choose to do so, make sure you are in an approved area or use campsites and picnic areas that have been set up for this purpose.
     - Water management: emptying and filling: Campers generate grey water (from the sink and shower) and sewage (from the chemical toilet). These cannot be emptied just anywhere. Therefore, it is essential to plan your trip including service areas for motorhomes, where you can empty tanks and refill clean water. Apps such as Park4Night or Campercontact are excellent for locating these points en route.
    - Where to shower if there is no toilet in the camper? If your van doesn't have an indoor shower, don't worry. There are solutions: you can shower at campsites (for a small fee even if you're not staying), at campgrounds, or even at many beaches where there are open-air showers. Some travellers also carry portable solar showers.

This summer, go for rent a camper in Barcelona and discover a way of travelling that goes beyond fixed itineraries and hotels. The road and the summer are waiting for you.
