What are the brands?

In the transition to sustainability, there are now established brands with years in the outdoor market and smaller ones, all guided by the same values and under the same business strategies that offer transparency in their production.

Patagonia

One of the leading and most recognised outdoor clothing brands is Patagonia, which in its beginnings was only dedicated to making climbing clothing. Today, it manufactures climbing, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, mountain biking, running or fishing clothing.

By dressing people who use nature as their main tool for sporting activities, Patagonia has set out to support and be part of those brands that produce without affecting the environment.. Among the strategies implemented by the brand is the donation of 1% of sales to organisations working to reverse the damage to the planet.

In particular, the project Worn WearAnd why extend the useful life of your clothes? Because the best thing we can do for the planet is to reduce consumption. Here is a video of the project's tour in Chile.

What is sustainability?

The United Nations (UN) defined sustainability as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". This definition is found in the Brundtland Report, published in 1987.

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting and, at the same time, one of the most exploitative industries for workers.. One of the most recent events that made the world begin to see the current fashion and clothing industry linked to abuses and dangers occurred in April 2013, when an eight-storey building collapsed in Savar, Bangladesh, killing 1,138 people.

Those killed were in a factory, called Rana Plaza, where thousands of people worked in deplorable conditions, producing the clothes sold by many of the world's most recognised brands.

For the following years, many institutions have taken on the task of educating and calling for responsible clothing consumption.taking into account all that is behind a single garment.

It is important to stress that no company, at present, can be considered fully sustainable. Day by day, each is seeking to change its business practices.. That is, from the amount of production or transport, to the materials used for each garment.
