The perfect day
-by Alejo García Iñesta.
He chose a sunny but cold winter day. His footsteps left little trace on the hard snow after the night's frost. Under the scarf, the old man's face burned. Every time he smiled, and he often did, looking at the landscape around him, little pinpricks appeared on his cheeks. This was the perfect day, he had been waiting for it for months. Just as this was the perfect mountain, with an idyllic transition from dark pines to the most pristine snow. As the sun set behind him, the old man reached the summit, and making a hole in the bivouac of pink rocks, he sat down. The sun granted him that vision, his last vision: a reddish-purple infinity. The first stars began to fill the sky, stretching out their hands to the one who was saying goodbye that night.
Rock became his skin, infinitely appreciative of the horizon.
