Capra sapiens

"Nem, nem!" sounded the voice of our new shepherdess. "Amun!" she called, and we knew we had to go up the hill. We liked her. She used to take us to eat rich branches and tender leaves, to discover new corners with spectacular views over the valley and to jump over ruins of old stone houses. I even felt a little sorry for him when sometimes we would escape along one of our secret paths to fill our horns with rich alfalfa while the dog, instead of stopping us, would run ahead of us. The poor goatherd, resigned, would chase us down the hill, jumping over bushes and scratching her legs on the brambles.

I remember the love in her eyes that hot day when, feeling very tired, I went to lie down next to her. My sisters never did that. The shepherdess, her eyes strangely wet, caressed my cheek and brought me some delicious plants that she had pulled up for me.
