Innocent
-by Agapito Pérez
As I savour a large piece of meat, I gaze back, lost in thought, at the sharp needles emerging from the Patagonian ice field.
I can't figure out if what we experienced up there was real or just a dream. I try to reconstruct the story, to remember every detail. There are still traces of blood between my fingernails, and to be honest, not having made the summit doesn't really worry me, it's the style that counts. It's the style that counts. To hell with the sponsors!
The expedition was doomed to failure before it began. Going into wild and hostile territory with someone you had just met was a mistake from the start. Nobody gives me orders, you bet they don't, ha, ha.
Suddenly, a voice over the radio interrupts my thoughts. It is them. I keep quiet. I have to think of something fast.
-I am Innocent.
