Where are we going?
-by Jorge Valencia García-
He loves to lead. Ever since he was young, he has been used to choosing the paths, at every crossroads, with almost infallible intuition. He is always ahead, determined, choosing paths and, after taking them, he looks at me slowly, while I check the correct route on the GPS. As I pick up the pace, following him, I can almost see his smile... "I told you so".
But everything changed on our first ascent of Iztaccihuatl. He hesitated, he had to turn back, look at me, ask for help... He discovered the new experience of hesitation: with the fresh snow the trails disappeared, so Lago, my border collie, had to wait for directions. I gave them to him with my eyes and the tip of a stick, he reacted surprised and happy.
That game of glances between us is sadly lost today. Since 2018 a plaque on the site declares the Ayoloco glacier extinct, due to climate change, and now, without snow, I ask myself the same question: where are we going?
Don't miss any adventure in the Pyrenees!
