The best weather conditions for hiking: what is our preference?

Hiking has become a favourite mountain activity for locals and tourists alike in Spain. An increasing number of people are attracted to explore the possibilities of outdoor activities, largely thanks to the weather conditions that are present in the different seasons of the year.

There are different climatic conditions that allow hikers to walk in the mountains; some are better and more favourable than others. Which weather conditions are preferred by most hikers for the feeling of enjoyment and comfort.

The best season

Hikers do not waste any season when it comes to venturing out into the wilderness. Each season manifests different variables and the right resources and equipment have been developed to cope with them without problems.

However, there is a favourite season for hiking in Spain: spring. Autumn comes second, followed by winter, while summer is not the best option if you want to do mountain tourism.

Zero precipitation

Rainfall is, without doubt and for obvious reasons, the most influential climatic variable for hiking in the Spanish mountains.

The presence of rain can set back a planned route. Ideally, there should be no rainfall; however, when there is light to moderate rainfall, there is greater flexibility because difficulties can be overcome if the appropriate equipment is available.

The degree of cloudiness

The state of the sky is essential when deciding to go into the mountains. Hikers consider that when the sky is clear or lightly cloudy it is better to go out, as this avoids the negative consequences of too much sun.

As in other activities, low or low cloudiness in the sky is also preferred, as it brings better benefits compared to those days when the sky is cloudy or very cloudy.

The ideal temperature

With regard to the ideal temperature, hikers prefer times when the temperature range is between 15 and 19 ºC because they feel more comfortable. Likewise, temperatures slightly above 20 ºC are favourable, without reaching very high limits.

Although hikers can adapt to cold temperatures by wearing the suitable mountain clothingIt is not customary to go hiking when the temperature is below -1°C, because the body can suffer serious consequences from the cold.

A visible environment

Hikers say that visibility is a must when they want to go hiking in the mountains. This condition allows them to appreciate the landscape without interruption. Therefore, they prefer occasions when there is no fog or mist to affect the observation of the environment.

Perfect visibility also serves as a safety mechanism to avoid accidents. When the field of vision is limited, risks are taken and the natural wonders are not fully enjoyed.

Although some hikers are attracted by a little mist or haze, none of them like dense fog on their way.

Wind speed

If strong winds occur, hikers may choose not to go out on the mountain in order not to compromise their own physical safety. In view of these, days with low wind speeds are preferred to ensure the enjoyment of the activity.
