Snow Tatami

The dark rocky peak of a volcano had been set in her pupils as an infant and, in those lively and curious orbs, had twinned with other peaks crowned over the years. With each ascent, despite her seemingly frail frame, her spirits tightened like the rope that held her and she grew bigger, even bigger, a colossus of unbreakable will overcoming the slope. And now, after opening the path through the painful gorge of indifference, ostracism and even the most blatant contempt for her womanhood, after prevailing over the furious whiteness of the avalanches, Junko Tabei he stared at the route above his head. A tatami of snow awaited on the summit of Everest.
