The reunion
-by Juan Cristobal Benito Ferriz-
Here alone again; dying and on the edge; the soroche does its thing.
As I sip something hot, I take the opportunity to soothe my aching hands with the warmth of the glass.
The howling of the wind is constant, strong; the tent sways on both sides, to the limit.
Outside, the ice is constantly cracking, making dry, shuddering noises that invade my soul; fear is trying to take hold of me at times.
I ask myself the same old questions so as not to go back, even though I know they will be in vain because this is my philosophy of life.
I visualise with my eyes closed, the route to the summit. A chance. Nothing can go wrong.
It's midnight; we must leave now.
I am overcome by the metamorphosis of the mountaineer and, drawing strength from "I don't know where", I start the journey to the summit.
Up there will be a mere formality; the most important thing will be the return to base camp.
Fastpacking is not about going faster. It's about going lighter.
If you come from classic trekking, this is the next step: learning to move with less weight,
more fluid and enjoying every kilometre more.
