It was a forestry engineer who decided to create a route linking the different towns and villages.and its farms and farmsteads in 1921, a route that was later lengthened and mapped by a former judge and a farmer in the late 1920s.
Every year, hiking enthusiasts flock to this route to marvel at this miracle of landscape and mineral wealth, since there are numerous deposits of anthracite, iron, zinc or slate.
Similarly, the highest peak of these mountains and the second highest in the United States, Mitchell's Peak, at 1,829 metres high, is located in North Carolina State Park and is a destination for climbers west of the Mississippi River.
The maintenance of the route is the responsibility of the different natural parks and hiking clubs and schools in the area, and All those who practise this sport dream of being able to walk the trail in one go, a very difficult goal to achieve and one that only 15,000 people have achieved since the 1930s when the route became popular.
So, as it is impossible to do the route in one go, many hikers decide to do a part of the route every year and Some have taken as long as 46 years to complete the entire trail.
For this reason, it is interesting to plan the trip from home and to be able to divide it into small routes to do and enjoy the scenic surroundings and the culture of the cities along the way, because, if this trip stands out for anything, it is for the disconnection from the frenetic pace of life and the continuous stimuli of modern society.
It was also perfectly illustrated in the film that was released three years ago, in 2015, "A walk in the woods starring Robert Redford, Emma Thompson and Nick Nolte, based on a best-selling novel by the writer and adventurer Bill Bryson.
This film takes place precisely on this path, so those of you who are thinking of starting the route can watch it to have a good time and to contemplate the landscapes that may await you on your arrival or discover it through the novel.
