Altitude sickness

-by David Carreres Lacasa

In my house there were only mountains. Mountains of books, mountains of clothes, mountains of dreams. I suppose anything can be piled up to form a small or large mountain.

For all of us, every crease was a valley, the bathtub a peaceful lake, and we often took a tiny cooker out of the rucksack we carried around all day and heated up some water to drink some of that broth prepared in a sachet with noodles.

My father would bivouac in the dining room and my little sister would take the sleeping bags out onto the balcony to air them out in a feast of wind, sun and clouds.

As you can imagine, in my house we suffered from what some people call altitude sickness, or what amounted to the same thing, longing for the weekend to come and forget about that daily simulation of living dreaming of snow-capped peaks.
