My mountain guide
-by Jose Luis Esquer Tomás
I took the path from the village towards the top, I had been going for about a kilometre when I saw a sheep trotting rattling in the direction I was going. The funny little animal had its feet painted bright blue from the knees down, so that I imagined that a dozen in a row would look more like a flock than a herd, and the shepherd would be wearing a moustache, stripes and a whistle to make himself respected. But as I was alone, it seemed to me that he was simply and logically wearing trousers. Since we were sharing a path, I thought to ask him if this one led to the top, to which he promptly replied with unpleasant indifference, that if he didn't see any other, it would be better to trust that this one was the right one. Sure? The sheep was, for she walked on, adding, in disbelief, that she would go on ahead because I was going too slow. Such surprise made it impossible to doubt the information, so I pulled after her.
