The Komoot app is ideal for exploring new places and finding new ways to reach your destination. It is very easy to use, offers offline maps and voice-guided navigation, among other functions. Read on to find out more about this tool.

What is Komoot. Features

Komoot is the most widely used app for planning cycling and hiking routes and navigating through nature. It is also a virtual meeting point for cycling, hiking and running enthusiasts.

It is characterised by its route design, as it is useful in the planning of personalised routes for each sport with topographic data. To create the route you must choose the type of road you want to ride (paved roads, narrow paths, quiet roads, among others).

Komoot also has ready-made routes that you can filter by distance, level of difficulty and access by public transport. Its navigation system can work without an Internet connection, as it turns your mobile phone into a GPS device and navigator.

The application allows you to download individual itineraries or complete maps that can be used without the Internet, so you know exactly where you are, even in remote locations.

How much does Komoot cost?

Before purchasing any of its products, the application and the website can be used completely free of charge.

The free region is the first individual region that you can access for free. Here you will have the possibility to test the main functions of the application.

If after testing Komoot, you decide to continue using it, the options you have are:

  • The purchase of a package in a single payment.
  • Pay the Komoot Premium subscription only once a year.
  • You can purchase the individual region at the end of the trial period. The cost will vary depending on the region selected.

The prices of the one-off payment products and Komoot Premium are:

  • Multi-regional package. You will have access to several regions in the same area for a cost of 8.99 euros.
  • World package. If you need more than 3 multi-region packs, the best option is the world pack which includes all individual regions for a price of 29.99 euros.
  • Komoot Premium. This subscription can be annual for 59.99 euros or monthly for 4.99 euros. It contains several exclusive features.

How to plan a route in Komoot

Select starting point and destination

  • Click on the map and select Start here. Komoot automatically saves this point as the start.
  • The same is then repeated with another point to mark the destination.
  • You can also type the name of a site or address to add as a starting point and destination.
  • Using the green fields on the left side of the planner, the selected location is automatically saved as start or destination.

Add waypoints

  • To add waypoints, click on the map. Choose Include in itinerary if you want the planner to include it and automatically modify the route.
  • Points of Interest or Favourite Places can be included by clicking on their respective icons to add them.
  • When you search for a place or address, that point is displayed on the map with several additional actions. Select the Include in itinerary action to add it as a new waypoint.

Drag and drop to modify the route

  • The route can be modified by moving the line.
  • When you drag and drop the blue line you generate a new waypoint.
  • To move existing waypoints, simply drag and drop them.

Order the waypoints

  • The order of the waypoints is changed by clicking on them and moving them up or down in the planner menu.
  • For reordering, the waypoints have to be visible.

How to export and import GPX files in Komoot

  • If you have an external GPS file in GPX format, you can import it into both the application and the Komoot.
  • You can also export a route in GPX format for use on another device such as Garmin or Wahoo.
  • You can import a GPX file as a planned or completed route. If as a planned route, you can save and edit it in the planner.
  • If it is a completed route, it is added directly to the list of routes in your profile. To do so, you have to indicate the sport and the date of the activity.

How to import a route from the application

  • To import the GPX file from the app you have to go to the profile and open the list of completed or planned routes.
  • In the top right corner you will see the Import tab. You can also click on the + symbol to the right of the paths and choose Import file.
  • This file can be uploaded from mobile storage, Google Drive or iCloud.
  • You can also import files from Garmin Connect and Wahoo. Select Import from respective devices. If you have linked your Komoot with your Garmin or Wahoo, it will direct you to the Connect app.

How to import the route from the website

  • You have to click on the + symbol on the right side of the menu and select Import a GPX file.
  • You will automatically be directed to a page, where you can import the file as a planned or completed route.
  • Now you must drag and drop the file into the window or click on Upload file to indicate a file on your computer.
  • Then, select Talk Original Itinerary if you want to have the Komoot keep it.

How to export a route

  • To download a route in GPX format, you can only download it from the website.
  • If the region where the route starts is unlocked, you can download it as a GPX file for use on another device.
  • You must click on one of the routes and choose Export to GPS device. The track is exported as GPX, and can only be used in applications with which it is compatible.

How to use Komoot without an Internet connection

One of the most relevant features of Komoot is to allow you to navigate without an internet connection. If the departure is for an area with a poor connection or you prefer to save mobile data, it is recommended to download the route.

You can download the planned route or the entire region to generate the route. In the first case, you must follow the instructions and in the second case you will see your location on the map at all times.
