Le Petit Train de Artouste
If you pass towards the Tena Valley on French territory by FormigalOnce you have descended all the magnificent paths that run along the border, you will be able to glimpse on the right a cable car that will take you to the top of the Petit Train de ArtousteThis is considered to be the highest train on our continent, which runs through the Pyrenees and is only open during the summer months. You can leave from the Lake Fabréges (located at an altitude of 1,200m), which will allow you to reach the station at Sagette (two kilometres above sea level).
Artouste is right on the border that delimits the Parc National des Pyrénéeswhich is world-renowned for its beautiful taiga-like landscapes.
The little train of Artouse is considered to be a the highest of all those travelling in EuropeThe route passes through places located more than two kilometres above sea level and, therefore, allows us to see numerous mountains such as La Sagette, the Pico Palas or the Balaitousall of them close to 3,000 metres above sea level. This is achieved thanks to small tracks barely half a metre wide.
Once we have boarded the cable car and are on our way to the train exit at SagetteIt will only take us a quarter of an hour to get there, and in the meantime we will be able to enjoy the most wonderful Pyrenean landscapes, and once at the top we can either take the train or stay and enjoy the natural scenery that surrounds us.
We recommend doing the latter, even if it is only a few minutes before taking the train back, as it is very worthwhile.
Once you've settled on the railway line, you'll first pass through a tunnel more than a third of a kilometre long before embarking on a 10km long crossing of the Soussuéou valley. During this pleasant walk you will enjoy the beautiful views and the smell of nature.
Once you have arrived at your destination, you can walk around it for an hour and 20 minutes or, on the other hand, spend a quarter of an hour on an easy trail that will take you to the Lake Artousteknown to be very peaceful.
