The Alps offer some of the best and most accessible mountain sports in the world. A combination of magnificent and varied terrain, an enviable snow record, excellent public transport, an unrivalled hut system and a long ski season make them a focus for mountaineers and skiers from all over the world.

The routes described are all alpine - they require both skiing and mountaineering. Although high level technical climbing ability is not essential, the skills needed to operate on steep slopes and glacier terrain, where the use of crampons and glacier progression techniques and use of ropes may be necessary. It goes without saying that avalanche skills and knowledge are vitally important for anyone who wants to ski mountaineering.

None of the routes are extreme, although conditions can be, which is why mountaineer judgement and good decisions are important.

Vanoise

Here is a selection of routes in the French department of Savoie and covers the Vanoise National Park and its surroundings. Skiing exploded in Savoie in the 1960s and 1970s, when all the mountain villages wanted to exploit the "white gold" that fell every winter. Despite the massive development of ski resorts, including some of the biggest and best in the world, many areas remained untouched and became the preserve of skiers. It is in these unspoilt areas that the real "white gold" of Savoie is to be found.

Central and Eastern Alps of Austria, Switzerland and Italy

Routes range from Alpine Switzerland in its far northwest to its far southeast, from Vaud to Graubünden, before slipping eastwards, following the vast arc of the Alps to the Austrian Tyrol and South Tyrol in northern Italy. Hut-to-hut trails explore the Bernese, Urner, Albula and Bernina Alps of Switzerland, as well as classic hikes through the Silvretta, Otztal, Stubai and Ortler regions of Austria and Italy.

The Central and Eastern Alps have an enviable snow record, and in many cases can offer ski touring when other areas are waiting for better snow cover. Areas close to and surrounded by 3000m peaks, glaciers and extensive permanent snowfields.
