The end of an adventure

-by María Elena Peñalver Paños-

I write this with frozen fingers. In memory of my fallen comrades. The wind was our great enemy. We had to fight its fury like lions to reach this tiny cave. Its ally the cold attacked us without warning. We were not prepared for such a drastic drop in temperature. No one was able to predict it.

We were deceived by the sun when we set off. We expected an uncomplicated journey. Four hours later black clouds obscured its light. The snow began to fall with such intensity that it made it impossible to return to base camp. Under the blizzard, frightened by the weather conditions, we decided to continue onwards to reach the shelter of an ancient cave known to our native guide.

We are five men. There is only room for two people in this stone hole. We take turns looking for their shelter even though we know that none of us will survive.

I am the only one left.
