The best trekking routes in Iceland

When to go?
Summer season: highland roads do not open until mid-June and many tourist facilities close at the end of August; low-lying coastal areas, especially in the southwest, are walkable from spring to autumn; winter actually closes most routes.
Cities & Services
Most towns and villages are not well situated for walking; it is essential to travel from place to place, and even inland, to enjoy some of the most scenic and interesting trails.
Difficulty and equipment
No special equipment is needed for easy routes; full equipment is needed for long distance trails; ropes, ice axe, crampons and experience for glacier trekking.

The routes
With Reykjavik as an established destination, Iceland is easy to reach. Once there, the routes described include both popular and lesser-known trails, from coastal walks and off-island trails, to the remote interior and polar ice caps. Most routes are signposted and waymarked, and include a number of easy hikes for beginners, but there are also high mountain routes with glacier traverses, including the classic Laugavegur trail.
