Get to know the Cocora Valley Trek circuit

One of the best ways to get to know Colombia, without a doubt, is to visit the green hills of the Cocora Valley.. It is famous for being one of the few places in the world where wax palms can be observed in their natural habitat.. You only need to look up at the sky to recognise these long trees, can grow to more than 60 metres and are covered with a few palm leaves at the top.

If you've read about this wonderful country, you'll know that wax palms are a national symbol of Colombia. and the tallest palm tree in the world. The reason why this gigantic tree is repeatedly quoted in our story is because the best way to see these gigantic trees with your own eyes is to visit this incredible circuit. right in the heart of Colombia.

This grand valley is characterised by thick grass and lush forest with huge clouds and a vigorous river.. The route is quite simple, walking the valley trails is the safest way to complete this challenge.. At the entrance, you will find two paths, we recommend you take the one on the right.

This trail will take you through the most open valley.and then you will have to go deep into the rainforest. Once there, your next objective is to get to the river, which will be easy if you don't stray from the path. On arrival, you will have to cross the river several timesBut don't worry about getting your feet wet, there are bridges you can use to cross it.

At the end of the path in the forest you will reach another crossroads.This time to visit the Acaime and/or the Finca la Montaña. The former is recognised as a hummingbird sanctuary and you can visit it 1 kilometre uphill, for a price of 4000 COP. If you want to see the great diversity of these wonderful birds, we recommend paying the entrance fee.

On the other hand, if you decide to visit the Finca because you are not prepared for the hummingbirds' detour, the steepest part of the trail will take you to your destination. It will be challenging, but well worth it. When you arrive you can enjoy the mountains and the whole valley at its best..

From the top of this hill, you will have to descend to the end of the valley.Once you have completed the tour, you will be able to appreciate the majesty of the wax palms. From there, it's just a short walk through the local crops to get back to where you started: the farming community of Cocora.

You are probably wondering: What happens if I take the left-hand path? The route will be even shorter and more direct. You will walk uphill for about 1 hour and arrive directly at the wax palm area.. From there you can only reach the end of the trail. Generally this path is recommended on rainy days, because the path to the right becomes muddy.

To return to the town of Salento, just take the transport, any of the jeeps that are lined up at the beginning of the trail waiting to take the hikers back.

As you will see, the Cocora Valley circuit is a very short trail.It could even be said that it is more of a walk, so that It will only take you 3 to 4 hours to complete..
