What are the risks of mountaineering?

Here is the interview conducted by Jorditoms and Lau, La Montañas, two mountain professionals.

A nice informative talk with two experts in mountain safety: Genciana Menesesfuture GRAE member and firefighter, and Dani Vergara a mountain guide working in the SEM. During the interview, a wide range of issues related to the mountain safetyself-rescue, self-rescue and FIRST AID. The two experts shared valuable knowledge and advice on how to deal with mountain accidents, what to do in case of injuries, what to include in a mountain first aid kit, how to request an air rescue, and the protocol before embarking on a mountain trip, among other topics.

The interview provided a unique opportunity to learn from experienced professionals in mountain situations, and all present benefited greatly from the information shared. Topics covered included practical tips for staying safe while exploring mountain terrain, key skills for self-rescue, personal anecdotes highlighting the importance of self-rescue on mountain expeditions and recommendations on essential equipment to carry on mountain adventures. In addition, common mistakes that novice hikers make when it comes to mountain safety and recommended certifications for those wishing to adventure safely were discussed.

This includes knowledge of cartography, both physical and digital, and an understanding of the route and basic needs, such as the right amount of water and clothing depending on the weather conditions.
  2. Accident ProcedureIn the event of an accident in the mountains, it is crucial to protect yourself, notify the authorities (such as calling 112), seek help and help only if you have the appropriate knowledge so as not to make the situation worse.
  3. Emergency Response: Specific protocols are discussed, such as not waving to a rescue helicopter unless help is needed, as this could confuse rescuers.
  4. First Aid KitThe importance of always carrying a first aid kit that is compact enough to fit in a backpack, but contains the essentials to treat minor accidents in the mountains is stressed.

It is vital for anyone wishing to venture into the mountains to obtain proper training and preparation, either through mountaineering organisations or personal training.

Experts emphasise the need to prepare physically and mentally, and mention common mistakes made by inexperienced people, such as lack of preparation and neglect of safety.

All in all, the interview was a rich source of valuable knowledge and advice for those seeking to venture into the mountains safely and be prepared for emergency situations.
