Many of us who love the mountains and enjoy the charm of the great outdoors are sensitive to its conservation. Some of us are aware of the fragility of ecosystems and the threat that climate change poses to the magical balance of life. We probably all want to continue enjoying nature and respecting its laws and limits. But what can each one of us do to keeping the mountain alive?

Beyond being respectful on our excursions, there are things we can do every day to enjoy more sustainable living practices. As well as reducing, reusing and recycling the things we consume, one area where we can make small-big contributions is in deciding to who we consumeThe company in which we place our trust and money to meet the basic needs of our lives.

ConSuma Consciencia, clear information for informed consumption

For this purpose ConSuma Consciencia (www.consumaconsciencia.org), a free online tool that strips companies bare and offers an x-ray of their essence, beyond the communication and advertising strategies that each one uses. This platform presents clear, rigorous, transparent and comparable information on the performance of entities that commercialise electricity. ConSuma Conscience collects and systematises information currently available on the grid, either provided by the entity itself or by other public or private organisations. The pilot project has just been published, for which 18 companies (or business groups) that market electricity for domestic use in Spain have been selected, ranging from local cooperatives to transnational companies.

Companies are studied through 60 parametersunder the prism of shared but differentiated responsibility. Through this tool it is possible to know the origin of the entities, their volume, shareholders, etc. as well as aspects related to economic management, such as fiscal transparency and the distribution of profits or internal governance, transparency and gender aspects. In addition, a series of specific indicators have been selected to show aspects related to the commercialisation of energy, such as the amount of renewable energy marketed by each entity or the radioactive waste emitted.

Thanks to ConSuma Consciencia we can busting certain myths such as that all companies are the same or that renewable energy consumption is more expensive than conventional energy.

ConSuma Consciencia is an online platform, independent, collaborative, non-profit and free to access which aims to encourage more reasoned and reasonable consumption, aligned with the values that each person wants to defend. It is important, in a such an economised society as well as our own, to know what interests we are favouring with our consumption. Therefore, with this tool, each person will be able to reflect and decide which companies they most identify with and want to consume from. Information is power and our small individual decisions determine our common futures.
