We'll find big walls, cold water, narrow passages less than a metre long, a rappel of 20m and a lot of chaos. A medium level canyon very accessible and comfortable. Highly recommended for beginners and can be combined with the Escarrilla canyon or any other canyon near Escarrilla. Panticosa.

How to get there

This aesthetic descent is located between the Lanuza reservoir and the village of Escarrilla. From Biescas on the N-136 towards Formigal, we pass through the village of Escarrilla, from where we have several options. Attention to the displacements, since they are track and road.

  • Park on the esplanade on the right, just at the end of the village (fountain). From here we walk to the entrance of the tunnel, to take the track on the right, which borders it, the so-called "Vuelta del Sombrero". At the first curve to the left, take a path that descends to the riverbed (return to Barranco Escarrilla).
  • Park to the left of the tunnel entrance.

Approach

At the so-called "Vuelta del Sombrero". At the first left-hand bend, take a path that descends to the riverbed (return to Barranco Escarrilla).

Descent

This is undoubtedly the big brother of the Barranco de Escarrilla. Once in the river, and through open stretches, we will gradually descend through cold water pools and large walls. Entering the bottom of the ravine, which narrows, at times with very narrow passages of less than one metre, which can make our descent difficult with high water levels. We will soon find the abseil, which with high water flow is best avoided with a slightly tricky climb to the right, to a ledge where we will find an old installation.

In its final part, past the chaos, the ravine channels the waters of the village and it is advisable to leave the riverbed. Choose the central hours of the day to see the spectacular and colourful play of sunlight reflected on the water of the cliffs, coloured by the orange tones of the immense limestone rock walls.

Return

Three options:

1. Go down to the Bubal reservoir.

2. Just before the chaos, climb up a very vertical path to the village of Escarrilla, where a fixed rope is installed.

Go up the rocky road on the right after the chaos to the village.
