Geert van Nispen is at it again: his second assault on the GR11 record for Parkinson's disease

Geert van Nispen attempt FKT GR11

Dutch athlete and adventurer Geert van Nispen has started his second attempt to achieve the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the GR11, the iconic Pyrenean trail that connects the Atlantic with the Mediterranean, on Monday 9 September. After its first unsuccessful attempt in June due to snow accumulation on the colsGeert returned to the Pyrenees this September, determined to complete 840 kilometres and 44,000 metres of vertical gain in less than 15 days, all with the aim of raising funds for Parkinson's research.

The challenge, in addition to its physical magnitude, has deep personal significance for Geert, whose mother has been battling Parkinson's disease for 12 years. "It's as if she is trapped in her own body," says Geert, who aims to raise awareness of the world's fastest-growing neurological disease and to raise 22,000 euros, one for every metre of elevation gain.

A challenge against time and terrain

The GR11 is known for its tough conditions, with hard parts and difficult terrain, where Geert will have to average out the toughest terrain. 56 kilometres per dayHe faces both physical and mental challenges. "I don't think too much about the total distance, I prefer to divide the effort day by day," says the runner. With an average of 12 to 14 hours of daily walkingGeert faces terrain where, at times, making two kilometres in an hour will be quite an achievement.

In addition to the difficulty of the terrain, this attempt will be carried out on self-supported modeThis means that Geert will have no external support. You will sleep in a mixture of mountain huts and bivouacs, collecting water from streams and eating mainly light food such as snacks, to avoid overtaxing your body during the long days.

A noble cause

Geert's motivation goes beyond the sporting challenge. His goal is to raise the profile of Parkinson's research and raise funding for the cause. Those interested in supporting Geert in his challenge and contributing to his campaign can do so through his donation page and follow his progress live from 9 September.

This challenge is not the first for Geert, who has already completed ultramarathons and extreme hikes to support Parkinson's research. His determination and passion for the outdoors have led him to transform his life, dedicating himself entirely to these physical and personal challenges.

(06/06/2024) Geert van Nispen abandons his GR11 Record attempt due to heavy snow accumulation on the cols

It is with great regret that Geert van Nispen has announced the suspension of his attempt to achieve the Fastest Known Time (FKT) at the GR11due to extreme snow conditions. "After covering 190 km and reaching an altitude of 1,910 metres at Ibón de Marboré, the route has become impassable and dangerous, with closed trails and blocked passes," he said.

The amount of snow this year is significantly higher than in previous seasons, making progress unsafe. Although Geert initially approached the issue with determination and "philosophy", the adverse conditions have made it impossible to achieve FKT's goal.

Geert expressed his thanks to all those who have supported and encouraged his adventure. "It's a bitter pill to swallow, knowing how much has been invested in this incredible adventure," Geert commented. However, he remains optimistic and plans to reattempt the GR11, possibly later this year. On his website there is already a countdown for this new attempt, now with the cols free of snow. End of August (date still to be determined).

In addition, Geert continues his commitment to the fight against Parkinson's disease. He encourages everyone to continue to donate to ParkinsonNL, stressing that every donation continues to make a difference in the fight against this disease.
