Here 🔥Stage 1 (GR11.3): Cabo de Higuer – Lesaka

↔️ Distance: 29.8 km
📈 Unevenness (+810 m), (-720 m) 📉
🕒 Time: 7h20min (walking time non-stop)
⚠️ Difficulty: The main difficulty will be the distance. The type of road is good and the route is well-signposted, except in the urban section.
💧 Water: Along the stage we will find several sources that we indicate in the text, as well as some streams, aljibes, etc.
📌 We place the start of the stage at the Cabo de Higuer. To see in detail how to cross Hondarribia and Irún, see the foreword.
📌 (0h0min; 0kms) Cape Higuer (30m). So, from the Higuer Cape we head towards Hondarribia, cross it and continue towards Irún. Once in Irún, we climb the Colon Promenade, pass through the town hall square and head towards the Alzukaitz Street. At the end of this street, just before crossing a creek💧 (Altxuko river), this is where we will take the road that leads to San Marcial. First red and white markings.
📌 (2h15min; 9,2 kms) End of Irún. We continue along the pedestrian promenade; then we cross the river and pass under the AP8 motorway. We continue right and immediately take a concrete road that starts steeply uphill on the left. On the climb we encounter the road that goes up to the…
📌 (2h45min; 10,8 kms) San Marcial Chapel (205m). In the area we will find, in addition to the chapel, a bar, a snack area and a couple of Sources💧. The ascent continues along a track and then a path. During the route we pass by the Saroiaberri farmhouse - very decorated and with a beautiful garden presided over by a large olentzero - and shortly afterwards a sign will welcome us to the Aiako Harria Natural Park. We continue ascending on the way to the...
📌 (3h45min; 15,1kms) col of Erlaitz (445m) where we find the famous "Piedra del Desertor" or "Mojón de Soroeta".
It is a mojón (mugarri) in which the following inscription is engraved: From here desertion is punishable by death. This warning was directed at the soldiers who in the 18th century were stationed there in the event of an invasion by the French, regarding the consequences of abandoning the ranks.
A road from Irún leads to this spot in the Peñas de Aia Natural Park. It is a very frequented place; there are picnic areas and several places to make fire nearby, although the only fountain we found says «not suitable for consumption». The GR11 continues approximately 1km parallel to the road, sharing the route with the GR121 (Vuelta a Guipúzcoa) until the Ursain pass, where it turns left and splits off from it. The march continues along a comfortable, descending path, in search of...
📌 (5h00min; 21.6 km) Dam of Endara reservoir (250m). We crossed the dam following the road and continued along it for about 500 meters until we reached the San Antón hermitage, which we found on the right hand side. (source💧). On the other side of the road, next to the Olaberri farmhouse (bar-restaurant), starts the steep path along which the GR11 continues. In a few minutes we reach the...
📌 (5h30min; 23,1 kms) col of Tellería or San Antón (415m) crossed by a concrete track. At the fork, we take the track on the right; shortly after, we leave the hamlet of Tellería on the left and, later, about 700m from the pass, we cross a track and continue straight ahead. This is a stretch of continuous uphill and downhill that runs through forests, meadows and hamlets. We will continue along this path for another 700m, leaving several hamlets to the left, until we leave it to take a path to the left that leads to the hamlet of Gardelsoro, where there is a watering hole for the animals. A track leads to the hamlet, which we follow until we leave it to take another main path. The GR11 turns to the right along the new track to immediately leave it behind for a path that leads off to the left. We join a path that runs horizontally halfway up the Illasmendi (505m). We pass under a high-voltage line and, when the descent begins and the path enters the forest, we find a small source💧. We continue down to the pass of...
📌 (6h30min; 26,8 kms) Alaseta/Alasta or Amargún pass (330m) on most maps. Crossed by the high-voltage line we crossed earlier, next to a pine forest and a water tank shaped like a farmhouse, the path forks. In front of us we go to Bera following the GR11 by the main route; on the right we will descend to Lesaka via the GR11.3 variant that we will take in this case. The trail descends quickly; we pass a pass (205m) crossed by a track with several hamlets (Bordatxo) and continue straight ahead, along a path that leads us back to the track from which we will descend without loss to…
📌 (7h20min; 29.8 kms) Lesaka (80m)
