    You've been waiting months for that trip. The flight booked, the itinerary mapped out, the backpack already with its own name. And yet, there's one detail that hardly anyone plans with the same care as their footwear or sleeping bag: connectivity.

    Arriving in Kathmandu, Torres del Paine, or the Alps, only to discover your Spanish mobile tariff doesn't work – or works at an exorbitant cost – is a classic modern traveller's tale. International roaming remains expensive, opaque, and full of small print. However, by 2026, there's a solution that has been available for a while and still isn't used by everyone: the eSIM.

    This guide is for the Spanish traveller heading out for trekking outside of Europe who wants to arrive at their destination with connectivity sorted, no billing surprises, and without relying on physical cards that get lost or don't arrive on time.

    What is an eSIM

    An eSIM is a digital SIM integrated into the phone's hardware itself. There's nothing physical to insert or manage. It's activated with a QR code or via an app, in minutes, from anywhere with Wi-Fi.

    For someone trekking abroad, this is a complete game-changer. Instead of hunting for a local shop upon landing at Lima or Delhi airport, you activate the plan the night before you leave home. By the time you touch down, your phone already has local data working.

    Compatibility is wide: iPhone XS and later, major Samsung Galaxy models, Google Pixel and many others. If you're not sure if your phone is compatible, look for it in settings under the digital SIM or eSIM option.

    Roaming can be a problem on certain trekking and mountain routes because: * **Lack of Coverage:** Many remote trekking and mountain areas, especially at higher altitudes or in very isolated locations, do not have mobile phone signal. This means you cannot make calls, send texts, or use data, even if you have roaming enabled. * **Cost:** Even where coverage exists, roaming charges can be extremely high in certain countries or regions. If you are travelling outside of your home network's agreement zones, or to countries with expensive roaming agreements, unexpected high bills can be a significant issue. * **Battery Drain:** Searching for a signal can consume a lot of battery power on your phone. When you are trekking for extended periods without access to charging points, this can quickly drain your battery, leaving you without communication even if a signal becomes available. * **Safety Concerns:** For trekkers and mountaineers, a mobile phone can be a vital safety tool for contacting emergency services or letting others know your whereabouts. The lack of reliable signal due to roaming issues can therefore be a serious safety concern. * **Inconvenience:** Even for non-emergency communication, the inability to check maps, communicate with your group, or access information can be inconvenient and disruptive to your trip. * **Limited Roaming Agreements:** Some mobile network providers may not have roaming agreements in place for certain countries or regions, meaning roaming will not work there at all.

    Roaming isn't just expensive. It's unpredictable.

    On multi-day treks in remote areas — the Annapurna Circuit, the W Trek in Chilean Patagonia, the Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt — your phone constantly switches networks depending on available coverage in each valley or mountainside. Each switch can lead to unexpected charges, connection drops, or loss of access to the tools you need most in the field: maps, weather reports, communication with your group, or local emergency services. This is exacerbated the more exotic the destination.

    Roaminag charges outside the European Union can soar to levels no trekker would contemplate if they read them before setting off. The problem isn't the technology: it's that most people leave Spain with their usual tariff without checking exactly what happens with data in the destination country.

    The process is simple. You choose an eSIM provider, sign up for a data plan for the country or region you're going to visit, and activate it by scanning a QR code with your phone. From that moment on, your mobile operates on local networks with local rates, without your usual carrier being involved.

    There are various platforms that offer this service with coverage in trekking destinations worldwide.     Before you go: how to prepare connectivity step-by-step

    Check your phone's compatibility. Look in settings for the option Digital SIM or check the model on the manufacturer's website. Most devices released since 2020 are compatible.

    Set it all up from home. At your destination, especially in rural or high mountain areas, you won't have the conditions to install applications or scan codes calmly. Do it with a stable Wi-Fi connection before you leave.

    Choose the plan according to your route. If your trekking route crosses several countries, look for regional or multi-destination plans. If you are staying in just one, local plans often offer more data for less money.

    Activate data saving mode. Even if you have gigabytes available, on the mountain battery power is the most scarce resource. Deactivate automatic synchronisation of anything you don't need in the field.

    Download offline maps before you leave. The eSIM guarantees you connectivity, but in high mountains the signal can be intermittent. Wikiloc, Maps.me or Komoot work perfectly without internet once you have the maps downloaded.
