    Feeling safe

    -by Daniela Belen Gonzalez-

We walked through forests and glacier thunder, it was almost my first mountain experience.

It was not long to go, the landscape was totally white. My body was starting to feel tired. Unexpectedly the weather changed, the wind was blowing snow and rain. I felt fear of the unknown, I knew I couldn't go back, so I looked at the fixed point of the refuge. It wasn't me who followed, it was my survival instinct.

We arrived. The site indicated "Refugio Otto Meiling, Cerro Tronador, 1881 masl, 1971".

Then, I understood the meaning of that word; because I felt safe. After crossing that door there was no storm, I was caressed by a warm welcoming silence. I realised that Raul was also my refuge, because he made me feel that way.

The fire was the echo of our silences, silences that screamed trying to understand what lay beyond. And that flame, it looked like my desire to reach the sky.
