    Caught in the storm

    -by Lourdes Bárcenas Campo-

In the shelter, the only sound was the soft crackling of the fire.

Trapped between four walls, the mountaineer reviewed in his mind every conquered peak he had climbed. Nostalgia enveloped him like a thick fog. The mountain, his teacher, had guided him through countless paths, teaching him the strength of his spirit and the fragility of his ego.

Just when he thought loneliness would be his only companion, a woman sat down next to him.

Her eyes, so deep, looked at him with an understanding that surprised him.

They shared a hot cup of tea while the storm raged in the shelter. When they finished, she said to him before leaving: "Perhaps the highest mountain is yet to be climbed.

The external storm ceased, but an internal one was increasing. With that simple sentence, an avalanche was unleashed inside him. He realised that the highest mountain was within him.
