Walking
-by David Goñi Serrano-
Dawn is just around the corner.
He will surprise us on the last climb, a little earlier than expected.
We've been walking all night, which is what we call that mixture of walking and
running, which is neither one thing nor the other, in the mad attempt to see the sunrise on the
moment when it comes out and at the precise moment when we reach the summit of the
Teide.
But we're a little late...
Is it perhaps the fatigue accumulated since the Socorro beach, the lack of sleep, the lack of
altitude?
We climb slowly, zigzagging along some zigzags that take forever.
At last, a thin line of light breaks the darkness.
There it is, silhouetted against the horizon, the silhouette of our longed-for desire.
Does it smell of sulphur or is it the desire to arrive?
