[REVIEW] Olight presents the new torches: Warrior Mini 2 & Freyr

Olight Flashlights

High quality and very innovative torches, this is what I knew about Olight torches: an American company that stands out for its LED torches. When we were asked to make a review of their new torches, I thought: "we'll have to look for a dark environment with water, mud...". These days I have been testing their new models WARRIOR Mini 2 y Freyr. I've been out in the mountains with these two little toys, and now I'll tell you what I thought of them. First of all, I can tell you that the size is very small - for the Warrior Mini 2, but also for the Freyr - and that when you shine the light from a distance at full power - in my case on a rocky mountain wall hundreds of metres away from where I was - you realise what high technology you are holding in your hand.

You can go specifically to the review of each model by clicking on the following shortcuts: Olight Warrior Mini 2 / Olight Freyr . We also include other models popular Olight brand lamps.

Olight Warrior Mini 2

The Warrior Mini 2 is a pocket LED torch, which in survival jargon is an EDC tactical torch. It is very powerful compared to other similar flashlights on the market, with a maximum output of 1750 lumens and a beam distance of 220 metres. We are surprised by the high power in a small size. It is the upgraded version of the previous Warrior Mini, which although slightly smaller, does not reach the power of the Warrior Mini 2: 17% brighter and 16% more range.

Unboxing of the Olight Warrior Mini 2

A small cardboard box, from which we extract a plastic housing for the torch. Warrior Mini 2The flashlight comes with a USB-magnetic charging cable (USB type A on one side and magnetic connector on the other side), a lanyard to attach the torch to the wrist and a pocket clip (in the picture they are already attached to the torch), a carabiner ring and the instruction manual. No case or pouch for the torch is included.

The main body of the lantern is completely black, with the brand and name written on the side. The tail is silver, with blue trim on the head and an all-blue pocket clip. The tail has a button that controls some of the torch's functions, as well as being magnetic and used to connect the charger. I liked that it can also be used to attach the torch to metal surfaces.

First impressions

I loved the size of the Warrior Mini 2It's ideal to carry in your pocket when you go camping or hiking. I'm more of a front-facing person, I have to say, but it's a good alternative, in terms of size and weight.

The first impression was one of robustness and durability, strength. The body is made of an aluminium alloy which makes it very solid. It is engraved, so that the texture and roughness is perfectly felt in the palm of the hand and it is very easy to grip when it gets wet or our hands get muddy.

When you turn it on and set it to full power (turbo mode: 1,700 lumens) you realise just how powerful this "little thing" in your hand is.

And one thing I didn't count on was water resistance. This is certainly very important for adventures that depend on it. And I found out when I tested it in water: it has IPX8 protection (submersible up to a certain depth in water). At first I didn't dare to submerge it in water, but then I saw that it was still on under water.

Operation

Great performance: I was surprised by the power: 1,750 lumens (in turbo mode), and the range, too, up to 220 metres. If we are going to analyse the autonomy in the mode moon we are going to 45 days of operation.

Multiple brightness modes.

  • Turbo1750 lumens, 4 minutes, 220 metres
  • High500 lumens, 218 minutes, 117 metres
  • Media: 120 lumens, 19 hours, 57 metres
  • Baja15 lumens, 164 hours, 19 metres
  • Moon1 lumen, 45 days, - metres
  • Strobe: ¿?

A proximity sensor automatically dims the light and turns it off after 1 minute of lens obstruction to prevent overheating. A feature that I think may be important to avoid overheating in your backpack or pocket if you turn it on by mistake.

IPX8 waterproof ratingProtected against immersion to a certain depth, specified by the manufacturer, typically up to 3 metres.

Two switchesThe side (handle) and tail switch. Tail switch: Fast action with this two-stage switch. You can activate the turbo quickly. Practical side switch.

Rechargeable battery. The charging cable attaches conveniently to the tail of the lantern magnetically. Simply place the torch on the magnetic connector and connect the USB to a power source, and the rechargeable 18650 3,500 mAh battery will charge.

The lantern Warrior Mini 2 has been subjected to impact tests up to 1.5 metres.

Olight Freyr

The Olight Freyr is a multi-coloured tactical torch with a maximum output of 1750 lumens and a range of 360 metres (the Warrior Mini 2 reaches 220m). An included traffic cone allows it to be used for directing traffic or signalling, giving it additional functionality.

Unboxing of the Olight Freyr

A packaging excellent: a nice white box with magnetic closure with a picture of the lantern on the front and technical information on the back.

What do we find inside? The lantern FreyrOlight 21700 custom battery (inside the torch), MCC3 charger (red inside), two-way pocket clip, silicone traffic cone, holster and manual.

Olight Freyr

The tail is magnetic with the 2-stage tactical button. This also serves as an attachment point for the MCC magazine. The aluminium alloy body has grooves that give it an aggressive texture. It plants well in the bare hand or with gloves, and equally well when the torch is wet. The clip can be attached to either end. The head is glued to the body tube and has the typical Olight electronic switch. It has a raised spot in the centre with a power level indicator in the centre.

If we analyse it in detail, the Olight Freyr is a hybrid between the Olight Warrior X Pro and the M2R Warrior Pro with the added RGB function for more versatile uses in various low light situations. The Freyr takes the rear tail cap and body tube from the Olight M2R Pro, with a new larger head to allow for the RGB LEDs and proximity sensor.

First impressions

The Olight Freyr is as durable as the Olight M2R that can survive drops and normal daily handling. Drop tested to 1.5 metres, and IPX8 certified waterproof.

When you hold it in your hand you realise how light and compact it is, with a weight of 202g and a length of 136mm it is compact and light enough to carry as EDC (everyday use).

The coloured LED lights add extra functionality, although depending on your intended use I think it may be purely an accessory, so you may need to consider whether other Olight models (e.g. the Warrior Mini 2) might be of more interest to you.

Operation

Big power in a small sizeThe light output is up to 1,750 lumens with a beam distance of up to 360 metres. Incredibly long burn time of up to 15 days in the moon (moonlight). The Freyr has a main LED in the centre of its optics, and then 3 coloured LEDs and a proximity sensor that shine through tubes in the optics.

  • Luminous intensity - 1750 Lm / 300 Lm / 5 Lm
  • Projection distance - 360m / 150m / 19m
  • Candela - 32400 Cd
  • RGB Lights - Red (30 lm), Green (60 lm), Blue (25 lm)

Multicolour and multipurpose. In addition to the normal white light, it also comes with RGB lights to react correctly to every situation. A perfect combination with the included silicone traffic wand. This can be interesting on a professional level or for emergency signalling.

It has double switchA side switch for selecting a coloured light and access to the different levels, and a tail switch to operate the white light tactically.

Function of USB recharging makes this light a very economical choice for all types of users. Powered by a high-capacity lithium-ion battery from 5000mAh 3.6V 21700 personalised.

Built for prolonged use, it feels in the hand solidity and robustness thanks to the compact aluminium alloy design. Certified resistance waterproof (IPX8) and drop resistant (1.5 m).
