    The aroma

    -by Jadwiga Graczyk-

Mieczysław Karłowicz's violin concerto was played on the radio. A little-known piece by an equally unknown Polish composer. He loved skiing and was a great climber in the Tatra Mountains, where one day, under an avalanche, his 32-year-old body was trapped. I am sure that his soul still inhabits some beautiful meadow or a peak with a wide view.

The music moved me, reminding me of my excursions in the Tatra Mountains. Abundant forests, idyllic hills, rocky peaks, wooden houses, smoked sheep's cheese. Warm beer with honey, cloves and cinnamon to warm the tired body after a long day of climbing and descending.

The Pyrenees are no substitute for me. It is beautiful, but it has a different scent: it smells of boxwood, and the Tatra, of stone.
    wet.
