El Altar is an extinct volcano located in the Andean mountain range of Ecuador., is famous for its 12 snow-capped peaks over 5,000 metres high in the shape of the letter CThe yellow lagoon is protected and hidden from the rest of the world. And the only way to get there is through the uncovered site, a trekking circuit.

Before starting our adventure, acclimatisation is very important, so we recommend spending a couple of days in the area before ascending the mountain. The weather on this route is often very unpredictable.. Rain is common, so be prepared with clothes and shoes for the occasion.
Our adventure begins in RiobambaThere are different starting points to reach our goal: the Altar. The walk will be uphill and depending on the weather, it can be a bit slippery and even difficult because of the mud. You will definitely have a fun adventure. As you climb, you will be accompanied by an incredible view, snow-capped peaks and beautiful vegetation.
After 7 hours of walking the route starts to get much better.. Our first station is in the heart of a hut on a hill that is made small by the majestic landscape with El Altar in the background. Here you can spend up to 2 days.
The ascent is really difficult given the weather conditions.However, the rewards are much greater. El Altar and its surroundings will undoubtedly surprise you.. You will be able to enjoy a view that is unique in the world, next to the yellow lagoon over the iconic dead volcano. Don't forget to bring your camera to catch every moment in this incredible mountain range.
What you need for trekking in El Altar
Unlike other routes such as the Huyahuash circuit and the Ausangate Trek in Peru, this circuit is much shorter and fasterand therefore you won't need much luggage to complete it. Thanks to the hut, you will only need a small bag in which you will need to carry important tools and equipment for the journey.
- Camping tent: At the end of the trail you will probably be exhausted, so a good tent to rest in is vital. Remember to get a sleeping bag and blankets. for the cold.
- Clothing and footwear: you don't want to be soaked if it rains. Altar Trek is known for its rain. That's why, it is very important to have waterproof clothing and high boots..
- Food and drinkThe route will take you only 2 days to go up and down, it is very important that you take enough food with youYou can even take the luxury of bringing something special to share with your friends in the hut. It is very important to bring as much water as you can.
