From the top of the mountain

Ascending the path, panting and with my heart pounding, I tried to guess if a few metres higher, at the top of the mountain, the beating would be worth it. For the moment his legs felt heavy, the tip of his nose was cold and he was short of breath, but he was not about to give up. Once he had the geodesic peak in his grasp, he could see the grandeur of the view and an absolute bliss permeated every corner of his soul. All the effort now made sense. There was no room in his mind for routine, last-minute meetings, or his boss's nagging. He felt light years away from traffic jams and underground lines. And there, as a tear of pure joy streamed down his face, he remembered a Kerouac quote about climbing the damn mountains.
