    Trekking poles are one of the most essential tools in the trekking world. mountain equipment of any hiking enthusiast. However, even the sturdiest poles can be in need of repair. In this guide, we'll tell you how to fix trekking poles where the adjustment thread no longer works and give you expert advice on how to keep your equipment in top condition. 

    You probably already know that there are three different types of mechanisms that allow you to adjust the length of your poles: screw, clip or button. Well, regardless of which one you choose, you should know that proper maintenance of these is essential to ensure their performance and durability over time. Today, however, we will focus on the most well-known poles, which are the first to appear on the market.  

    From experience we know that these poles are resistant and stoically withstand the thousands of unforeseen events that can arise during mountain adventures, but, unfortunately and due to the passage of time, it is quite common for them to present problems such as loosening or thread breakage. In fact, this is the main reason why they end up being discarded.  

    Tools and materials needed 

    To repair the poles, you will need some basic tools and materials. These include: 

    • Contact glue: it is important that the glue you choose is of this type because, being elastic, it will not break when the pieces rub against each other as they move and, in addition, when it dries it has a superficial adherence. 
    • Spanner or hex spanner: these tools will allow you to disassemble and reassemble the affected parts of your poles with precision. 
    • Tape measure: this will be useful for measuring and ensuring the correct alignment of the repaired parts. 
    • Thread cleaner: to remove any dirt or debris that may hinder the repair process. 

    Step-by-step repair process 

    1.  Disassembly: The first step is to disassemble the poles. To do this, locate the junction point between the pole sections and, using the appropriate spanner or hex spanner, gently loosen the joint by turning counterclockwise. It is important to apply even and controlled pressure to avoid damaging the thread or surrounding parts of the rod. Once the joint is loose, carefully separate the sections of the rod, making sure to keep the parts and components in order to facilitate the repair or maintenance process.
    2.  Cleaning: Carefully clean all parts, paying special attention to the thread and making sure to remove any residue or dirt. This step is important because it helps the treatment to have a better effect and grip by removing any dust that may be on the pole parts. Simply use soap and water and then dry with a cloth. 
    3.  Contact adhesive application and drying: apply the appropriate amount of contact adhesive. contact adhesive on the affected areas of the thread and secure it in place. Do not overdo it with the amount of product, the important thing is that the glue covers the entire surface of the part to ensure the necessary grip.

    The strength of the glue increases over the hours, so it is best to leave it to act for 24 hours before proceeding with the next step, which is assembly.  

    1.  Reassembly: reassemble the pole parts, making sure they are aligned correctly and adjusting the tension as necessary.
